This jewellery was inspired by a BBC2 TV programme I filmed some years ago called The Antiques Show, for which I had to dress up in a selection of vintage dresses from 1900 to the 1960s. Swipe to see a picture of my Edwardian outfit. I had to change multiple times in a tiny loo in a central London Cafe ( oh the glamour of television). By far the hardest to put on was this Edwardian costume , because every single part of it was done up with what seemed like hundreds of teeny, tiny buttons, and unlike the dress\u2019 original wearer, I didn\u2019t have a lady\u2019s maid. Enjoyed the look though and fell in love with beautiful vintage buttons. Shown with the necklace is a box of Victorian boot buttons, by Kirby, Beard and Co, makers of pins, needles, buttons and inventors of the Kirby hair grip.       \n\t\tI couldn\u2019t resist making this brooch in response to the fact that this November Sotheby\u2019s New York are auctioning Maurizio Cattelan\u2019s \u2018Comedian\u2019- a banana duct taped to a wall - for an estimated figure of US$1m-US1.5m. The successful bidder will receive a banana (real), a roll of grey duct tape, a certificate and instructions of how to stick the banana to a wall and presumably replace it as it rots, which they will do at their own cost.
      If this doesn\u2019t appeal, can I suggest my brooch which looks exactly like the original in miniature form and has several advantages. The banana is lovingly crafted from clay and won\u2019t rot, the wall is included in the purchase price (there\u2019s a selling point) and because the brooch measures 5cms square, it is portable and wherever you wear it, you can demonstrate your commitment to contemporary art. Don\u2019t know how much to charge for it yet , maybe I should ask Sotheby\u2019s, but I am happy to throw in a certificate of authenticity and it does have a title. \u201cHave a Banana\u201d.

Finding, cleaning, cutting, grinding, wire weaving- it is astonishing how much work ( both from myself and my husband) goes into something so small! Milady is made from clay (Miclaydi? Sorry can never resist a dreadful pun!). Her job is to display jewellery. Her inner skirt is filled with rings and her outer skirt supports an arch, currently hung with my flower basket earrings. Since childhood, when my dressing up box contained a hooped petticoat, I have always loved a big skirt. Before the advent of the zip fastener in the 20th century, buttons were a principal way of securing clothes and mirrored the elaborate decorative fashions of the day. These vintage buttons are made from cut steel and lustre glass and were designed to sparkle like diamonds, and to catch the sunlight and the candle light. In classical mythology, the Naiads were the Nymphs of fresh water, presiding over springs, lakes, rivers and fountains . If the Naiad died, the source dried up. As a lover of the Thames and London\u2019s canals, water is a huge inspiration for me and I have tried to conjure it up here with flowing wire, pearls and opalites. Unlike many mythological female divinities, Naiads were typically light hearted spirits, kindly disposed to mankind.
